Frequently asked questions

What do the profit figures mean?

Unless a listing says otherwise, profit means seller's discretionary earnings — what an owner-operator takes home before their own wage. It is the figure small businesses are usually priced on, and it is not the same as net profit after a manager's salary.

Is the property included?

Usually not. Most listings here are the business only, with the premises held on a lease that transfers to the buyer. Where freehold is included the listing says so explicitly — and if it matters to you, ask before you travel.

Are the numbers verified?

No. Everything you see is supplied by the seller and reviewed by us for obvious nonsense, not audited. Ask for three years of tax returns and bank statements before you offer, and have an accountant read them.

Can I contact the seller directly?

Use the form on the listing. Some sellers list openly, others sell confidentially because staff and customers do not yet know — in those cases enquiries reach them through us.

What is a fair multiple?

It depends entirely on the trade. A bookkeeping practice with recurring retainers sells for far more than a restaurant with the same profit, because the earnings are more likely to survive the handover. The valuation calculator gives ranges by type.

Do you help with financing?

No — we are a directory, not a broker. Many sellers here will consider partial seller financing, and SBA lending is common for businesses of this size in the US. Both are worth raising early.
